After shining in the PBA Rookie Skills Test, Jorey Napoles makes history as the first-ever Technological Institute of the Philippines (T.I.P.) Engineers alumnus to be drafted in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

The Phoenix Fuel Masters selected the 6’4” forward as their last pick during the first round, drafting Napoles 12th overall in the 2018 PBA Rookie Draft on Sunday, 16 December 2018. In a report by TV5 ESPN, the 25-year-old Napoles was hailed as a “draft sleeper” by some PBA coaches who witnessed his performance in the two-day 2018 PBA Rookie Draft Combine, including an 18-point outing in the semifinals.

“The one who surprised is not from the UAAP or NCAA. It’s Jorey Napoles from T.I.P. Much impressed. It’s the first time I’ve seen him play. He looks ready for the PBA,” Rain or Shine Elasto Painters head coach Caloy Garcia was quoted as saying.

Phoenix head coach Louie Alas has high hopes for his new player. “For his size, he can shoot the three. He had a lot of deflections,” he told TV5 ESPN.

Meanwhile, T.I.P. Engineers Head Coach Potit de Vera credits Napoles’ coachability and defensive-mindedness as his best traits. He said, “We’re very proud of him. One of our goals when I started with T.I.P. last 2012 was to develop a full-blooded Engineer in the PBA; someone who can make T.I.P. proud in the PBA.”

Hailing from Albay, Napoles played for the T.I.P. Engineers from 2012 to 2017, winning the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) award during his final year with the Engineers. Napoles also emerged as an MVP candidate during the 2018 PBA D-League Foundation Cup where he averaged 11.2 points and 10 rebounds for Marinerong Pilipino-TIP. He most recently played for the Bulacan Kuyas-Mighty Sports in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
