TIP Students Swing into High Gear for Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014

Students from various engineering programs of the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) are in full gear for the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2014.

Four student teams from TIP, together with 146 other student teams from 16 countries across Asia and Middle East, put into concrete practice the scientific knowledge and engineering skills they have acquired in school in order to find innovative ways to achieve smarter mobility and reduce the impact of energy consumption on the environment in this year’s Shell Eco-marathon Asia challenge. Participating TIP students were able to design and build four energy efficient vehicles that are set to hit the streets of Manila for the said annual mileage competition.

The Shell Eco-marathon is an annual educational racing competition organized by the Shell Company to challenge students from around the world to design, build, and test ultra energy-efficient vehicles. This unique competition started first in the Americas, then in Europe and Asia. For this year and in the next two years, Shell Eco-marathon Asia will be held in the Philippines. Unlike the usual car race, competition winners are not determined by speed, but by the farthest distance traveled on the least amount of fuel.

In 2012, TIP students joined the same competition held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. TIP Mileage Team, one of the two teams sent by TIP, ranked third in Asia for the prototype diesel category with 164 km/l mileage record, making TIP’s vehicle entry as the most fuel efficient diesel prototype car in the Philippines. Shell Eco-marathon Asia also gave its first “Best Team Spirit Award” to the same team for standing out with its collaborative spirit, positive dynamics and highly energized attitude displayed by the team members during the entire event.
