T.I.P.ians bag awards from Taiwan CYCU’s Int’l Contest on Smart Technology

Five Computer Engineering students from the Technological Institute of the Philippines (T.I.P.) Quezon City won awards at the International Contest on Smart Technology Design for Long Term Care and Home Life, the culminating activity of the 2019 Chun Yuan Christian University (CYCU) Summer Internship Program held last August 5-26, 2019 at the CYCU campus in Chun Li, Taiwan.

A total of 120 students from the Philippines, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Taiwan partook in this year’s internship program. The students from the different schools were grouped according to their field of interest allowing them to work with other nationalities. Participants created their project under the guidance of faculty and graduate students from CYCU. They presented their outputs last August 23, 2019 and the awarding happened on the same day.

Fifth year CpE student Desiree Bonilla Lacena was part of the team hailed as this year’s grand champion while another fifth year CpE student, Wendie Mae Bobis Melendrez, was with the team who got third place. The grand champion won NTD 10,000 and the third placer won NTD 2,000.

Lacena noted, “We did not expect to win because we experienced a lot of difficulties while we were working on our prototype called Smart Wireless Cooling Tumbler.” She added, “I believe the main reason why we won was because we were able to present and explain our project confidently even if our prototype failed to function perfectly.”

The Smart Wireless Cooling Tumbler is a device that can make water cold by placing a tumbler on top of a cooling device. It seeks to benefit the elderly people living in nursing homes. The third placer's project design is called Augmented Reality System which involves an application and a flash card and its aim is to revolutionize class discussions. Students download and use the application to scan the flash card and the app produces a 3D version of the image in the card.

Three T.I.P.ians were also members of the teams who won Excellence Awards. Jeah Pielago was with the team who invented the Artificial Intelligence Fan; Alvin John Reyes was part of the group who created the Dragon Fly Drone with Facial Recognition System Using Kitten Block; and Hayden Banjawan Sabangan was one of the members of the group who designed the Smart Trashcan. Excellence Awardees got NTD 1,000 each.

The CYCU Summer Internship program was endorsed to the students by T.I.P. QC College of Engineering and Architecture Dean Dr. Jesusa Padilla following the partnership between the T.I.P. and CYCU last January 15, 2019 when T.I.P. hosted the CYCU 2nd International Workshop on Advanced Technology.
